When to visit Uganda for safaris
Uganda, known as the “Pearl of Africa,” offers exceptional safari experiences throughout the year. From gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to wildlife game drives in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks, Uganda’s diverse landscapes and unique biodiversity make it a year-round safari destination. However, the best time to visit for a safari depends on the type of experience you’re seeking, your budget, and your tolerance for weather variations.
Dry Season (June to August and December to February) – Best Time for Safaris
The dry seasons are generally considered the best time to visit Uganda for safaris. During these months, rainfall is minimal, which means the roads are more accessible, and the wildlife is easier to spot. Animals tend to gather around water sources, offering great opportunities for game viewing and photography. Parks like Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, and Kidepo Valley offer excellent game drives during this period, with sightings of lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, and many antelope species.
This is also the most popular and peak season for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. Trails in Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks are less muddy and slippery, making trekking easier and more enjoyable. However, due to high demand, permits for gorilla trekking often sell out months in advance, and accommodation prices may be higher.
Wet Season (March to May and September to November) – Budget and Birdwatching Season
Uganda’s wet seasons bring frequent rainfall, particularly in April and May. While the rain can make some roads and trekking trails challenging, it is also a time of lush, green landscapes and fewer tourists. If you’re traveling on a budget, this is an ideal time, as many lodges offer discounts and permits may be easier to obtain.
The wet season is also the best time for birdwatching. Uganda is home to over 1,000 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork and Albertine Rift endemics. Migratory birds also visit Uganda between November and April, making this period a paradise for birding enthusiasts.
Despite the rain, some parks like Kibale Forest remain accessible for chimpanzee tracking, and game viewing in parks such as Kidepo Valley can still be rewarding. Just be prepared for unpredictable weather and pack appropriately with waterproof gear and good hiking boots.
Special Considerations
If you’re combining your safari with cultural experiences, visiting during festival seasons such as Independence Day in October or Martyrs’ Day in June can add a unique dimension to your trip. Additionally, if you plan to trek gorillas, securing your permit early is crucial, regardless of the season.
Uganda offers something unique in every season. For the most comfortable and wildlife-rich safari experience, the dry months from June to August and December to February are ideal. However, if you prefer fewer crowds, lower prices, and excellent birding, the wet season may suit you better.
